When you run Mike Leach’s ‘air-raid’ offense, wide receiver is always a position of need. Monday, Mississippi State addressed that need in a big way through the transfer portal with the addition of Alabama grad transfer WR Tyrell Shavers.

At 6’6, Shavers will provide an immediate impact in Starkville as the Bulldogs shift to the pass-heavy offense that Leach brought with him from Pullman. The Bulldogs’ two leading receivers from 2019 in terms of catches, Deddrick Thomas and Stephen Guidry, are gone, so Shavers and JUCO transfer Malik Heath will have a chance to quickly step into the starting lineup.

The new WRs will work alongside grad transfer QB KJ Costello, who comes to Starkville after three seasons at Stanford.

After committing to Alabama as a 4-star recruit in 2017, Shavers ended up catching just two passes in Tuscaloosa while he was stuck behind a star-studded group of WRs. Shavers isn’t the only member of the Crimson Tide to transfer to Mississippi State this offseason as OL Scott Lashley returns to his home state to finish his college career.

The Bulldogs’ class of 2021 also got a boost on Monday with the addition of ILB Navonteque Strong, a JUCO transfer from Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C.

According to 24/7 Sports, Strong is the top-ranked JUCO ILB in the class of 2021.
