The Mississippi State Department of Health is reporting 586 new cases of COVID-19.
Todays report represents a combination of cases recorded on Saturday (233) & Sunday (353). This brings the states total up to 110,592. Zero deaths were included in todays report. To date, 3,171 Mississippians have passed away from the virus.
In the latest hospital data from the MSDH, overall hospitalizations crept back above 500.
State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs recently warned that rising COVID cases and the upcoming flu season could result in the states healthcare system becoming stressed. As of Friday, 12 Mississippi ICU beds had less than 10% capacity available, and 6 all in the metro area had zero availability.
Dr. Dobbs attributed the rising case totals to a lack of participation in the measures to reduce transmission mask-wearing, social distancing & avoiding large gatherings, especially indoors.
While he didnt provide specifics, Dr. Dobbs stated that you may see some additional action taken by the governors office at some point this week. Governor Reeves allowed Mississippis statewide mask mandate to expire earlier this month.
