The Mississippi State Department of Health is reporting 1,251 new cases of COVID-19 – the state’s largest one-day rise.

Today’s report brings Mississippi’s total up to 43,889. 1,358 Mississippians have passed away from the virus following the confirmation of 3 additional deaths.

COVID-19 hospitalizations have surpassed 900 and ICU bed usage increased to 284.

Last week, State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs expressed heightened concern for the state’s healthcare system as cases and hospitalizations continue to grow.

“Every day that we add 1,000 new cases, statistically, that’s another 170 patients that are likely going to be in the hospital in the next couple of weeks. So, we anticipate significant, ongoing stress within our hospital system,” he said.

As of Friday, Dr. Dobbs stated that 8 “major medical centers” in Mississippi had 0 ICU beds available.

This morning, Governor Tate Reeves added ten additional counties to order implementing mask mandates and stricter guidelines in hotspot areas. The statewide ‘Safe Return’ order was also extended until August 3rd.

On a positive note, the Department of Health is now able to estimate that 30,315 Mississippians have recovered from COVID-19.
