The first win of the 2020 season has finally come for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.

In an away matchup versus conference foe North Texas, the Golden Eagles defeated the Mean Green by a tune of 42-31.

Starting out hot, senior quarterback Jack Abraham connected with Demarcus Jones for a 22-yard touchdown with 11:30 remaining in the first quarter, and then less than a minute later, freshman running back Frank Gore, Jr. found his way into the end zone for the first time in his young career.

The Mean Green would make things interesting right before the half with an 80-yard scoring drive, however, they left a little too much time on the clock as Southern Miss’ Briggs Bourgeois was able to put a 46-yard kick directly through the uprights just seconds before intermission.

Coming out of the half with a 20-10 lead, Jason Brownlee hauled in a 68-yard pass from Abraham to make it a three-possession game.

Then, early on in the fourth quarter, Darius Mayberry scored on four-yard touchdown run, officially eliminating any hopes of a comeback for North Texas.

Offensively for the Golden Eagles, Abraham threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns, while Gore compiled 130 yards on 22 carries. He is the first Southern Miss player to surpass 100 yards on the ground since De’Michael Harris did it on November 16, 2019, against the University of Texas at San Antonio.

For North Texas (1-2, 0-1), Austin Aune passed for 339 yards and two touchdowns.

Next up for the Golden Eagles (1-3, 1-1) will be a home matchup versus Florida Atlantic (1-0) and first-year head coach Willie Taggart.
